Withdrawal Effects

Stopping a medication too quickly can sometimes result in symptoms called a discontinuation syndrome. These symptoms vary according to the medication being stopped. It is important to talk with your healthcare provider before stopping your medication and to follow his/her instructions regarding how to gradually decrease the medication. Examples of symptoms experienced because of stopping a medication too quickly include:

  • Anxiety
  • Abnormal dreams
  • Dizziness
  • Agitation, restlessness
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Sweating
  • Headache
  • Sensory disturbance, such as shock-like symptoms
  • Tremor
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Relapse of manic or depressive episode
