Stopping a medication too quickly can sometimes result in symptoms called a discontinuation syndrome. These symptoms vary according to the medication being stopped. It is important to talk with your healthcare provider before stopping your medication and to follow his/her instructions regarding how to gradually decrease the medication. Examples of symptoms experienced because of stopping a medication too quickly include:
- Anxiety
- Abnormal dreams
- Dizziness
- Agitation, restlessness
- Nausea, vomiting
- Sweating
- Headache
- Sensory disturbance, such as shock-like symptoms
- Tremor
- Rapid heart rate
- Relapse of manic or depressive episode
